Fifth Consecutive Grand Prix Win For The Australian SailGP Team

Fifth Consecutive Grand Prix Win For The Australian SailGP Team

We will never get tired of celebrating another Grand Prix win for the Australian SailGP team. Congratulations for getting the gold at the first Chicago SailGP Grand Prix at Navy Pier.

All eyes and competition are on the back-to-back SailGP Champions as they take their 5th major event in a row. Though they make it look easy, the team had to fight their way back from an uncharacteristically flat performance in the fourth fleet race to narrowly reach the final by 1 point over New Zealand.

Ending with a 7-2-3-9-1 fleet racing record in Chicago, Slingsby said it was clear that the team is ‘very beatable’.

“We were so close to not being in that final today but we managed to sneak in and get the win,” he said. “The job was 95% done but [the fleet] left a little opening and no-one went for us in the last race.”

However, once they made it to the final, the experienced Australian Team put on full display why they are the team to beat, executing a perfect race start to leave competitors Canada and Great Britain trailing in their wake.

For each of the five fleet races at every SailGP event, WLTH will fund and participate with Parley for the Oceans to conduct 500m² of beach and ocean cleaning if Australia secures first place. They will then conduct 300m² if the team places second, 200m² if third or 100m² for finishing in any other position. For the final race at each event, Parley for the Oceans will conduct a whopping 1500m² of beach and ocean cleaning if Australia comes out on top, and 1000m² or 500m² for a runners-up or third placed finish.

The Australia SailGP team’s performance in Chicago equates to 2,700m² of beach and coastline cleanup by the WLTH team, alongside our partners, Parley for the Oceans.

Combine this with the 2500m² for the first event in Bermuda, and the additional 5000m² contributed for their Season 2 victory; the total tally of beach and coastline cleanup is 10,200m² for Season 3 so far. Looking forward to more!
